PANGKALPINANG -- PT TIMAH (Persero) Tbk continues to strengthen its environmental conservation efforts. One of these initiatives is the planting of mangroves as part of the Company’s commitment to supporting sustainable development and Indonesia’s goal of achieving Net Zero Emissions (NZE) by 2060.
Throughout 2025, PT TIMAH planted a total of 36,100 mangrove seedlings across the Bangka Belitung Islands Province and the Riau Islands Province.
The mangrove planting program forms part of the Company’s efforts to maintain the balance of coastal ecosystems while strengthening climate change mitigation initiatives. In implementing the program, PT TIMAH collaborates with local communities, fishermen groups, regional governments, environmental organizations, and various other stakeholders.
PT TIMAH Department Head of Corporate Communication, Anggi Siahaan, stated that mangrove planting is one of the Company’s initiatives to preserve the environment while supporting the national agenda of reducing carbon emissions.
“Environmental conservation is an important part of the Company’s operations. Mangrove planting is not only aimed at protecting coastal ecosystems but also at supporting climate change mitigation efforts by increasing carbon absorption capacity,” Anggi said.
Mangroves provide numerous ecological benefits that are crucial for coastal areas. In addition to serving as natural barriers that protect shorelines from abrasion and erosion, mangroves help reduce the impact of tidal flooding and various other coastal hazards.
Furthermore, mangrove forests are recognized as one of the most effective ecosystems for absorbing and storing carbon dioxide from the atmosphere. This capability makes mangroves strategically important in supporting global efforts to slow the pace of climate change.
“Mangroves play a significant role in environmental protection. In addition to safeguarding coastal areas, they serve as highly effective natural carbon sinks, contributing to Indonesia’s Net Zero Emissions target,” he said.
Anggi added that mangroves also help maintain water quality by absorbing various pollutants, including heavy metals and chemical substances that could otherwise contaminate marine ecosystems.
For this reason, PT TIMAH continues to encourage community participation in mangrove planting and maintenance programs to ensure that their environmental, social, and economic benefits can be sustained over the long term for coastal communities. (*)
