KARIMUN -- PT TIMAH (Persero) Tbk continues to play an active role in supporting village development and cultural preservation within its operational areas. One of these efforts is its support for the construction of the Tanjak Gate, also known as Simpang Tanjak, in Sawang Laut Village, West Kundur District, Karimun Regency.
The gate, which features the iconic Malay tanjak headgear design, not only enhances the appearance of the village but also serves as a symbol of the local community’s cultural identity.
The assistance was symbolically handed over by Kundur Area Division Head Ronanta to Sawang Laut Village Head Jefrizal at the Tanjak Gate site on Thursday (June 11, 2026).
Sawang Laut Village Head Jefrizal explained that the construction of Simpang Tanjak was driven by the desire to create a landmark that represents Malay culture as the village’s primary identity.
According to him, the gate’s location at a strategic intersection serves as an entrance to residential areas, the village office, and several other parts of Sawang Laut Village.
“This is Malay land, so we wanted to create a landmark that reflects our community’s culture. Alhamdulillah, Simpang Tanjak now stands as a new face of the village and has become a popular photo spot for visitors,” he said.
He explained that before the gate was built, the area was known as Simpang Mak Janda. However, following a collective agreement, the name was changed to Simpang Tanjak because it better reflects the cultural values and identity of the Malay community.
“The tanjak is a symbol of Malay tradition that represents honor and pride. That is why we chose the name Simpang Tanjak, so people can more easily recognize the village through its cultural identity,” he said.
In addition to strengthening the region’s identity, Simpang Tanjak is also expected to generate economic benefits for the local community. The area is increasingly being used as a community activity space and supports micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs).
“We are already seeing multiplier effects. Residents can sell their products around the area, and during durian season, it often becomes a gathering place for the community. Indirectly, it also supports local economic activity,” he explained.
He expressed appreciation for PT TIMAH’s support and its ongoing collaboration with the village government through various development and community empowerment programs.
According to him, PT TIMAH’s contributions have been felt by the community through initiatives that support the economic, social, and infrastructure sectors.
“PT TIMAH’s support has been tremendously valuable to our community. Many programs have been implemented together, including white seabass farming, hydroponic farming groups, MSME development for shrimp paste processing, assistance for places of worship, clean water facilities, and various other community programs,” he said.
He noted that PT TIMAH’s various programs have delivered tangible benefits in improving community welfare, particularly for fishermen and coastal community business groups.
“We have experienced the benefits firsthand. These programs help stimulate economic activities within the community and support gradual village development,” he said.
Looking ahead, the Sawang Laut Village Government hopes that its strong partnership with PT TIMAH will continue to support future development initiatives and community economic empowerment programs.
“We hope this positive collaboration will continue. There is still a great deal of village potential that can be developed together, especially programs that can create economic opportunities and benefits for the community,” he concluded. (*)
